Get to Know Your Wet Spots


To test your soil and to understand how emitters work, buy a single emitter, use an emitter punch (which cuts a tiny circular hole) to pierce a hole near the bottom of an empty plastic one-gallon milk jug, and insert the emitter's barb. Fill the jug with water and place it on a dry spot in the garden. After the milk jug is empty (which may take 24 hours or more because it's not under pressure), dig a small trench next to the emitter to see the shape of the wet spot in your soil. This is the most graphic way to understand how the water from each emitter you install will move in your soil. (The shape of the wet spot will change, usually both wider and deeper, when the emitter is used under pressure.) The shape of the moist area is affected differently by each type of garden soil and ranges from long and carrot-like to squat and beet-shaped. Emitters with a higher rating, such as 2 or 4 gph, will cause the wet spot to be wider than 1/2 or 1 gph emitters.

A moist-but-not-too-wet spot that is the key to drip irrigation's superiority over all other forms of irrigation. With proper timing, a drip irrigation system provides moisture to the soil without overly saturating the pore spaces in the soil. The labyrinth of minute pore spaces helps the soil breathe. When a more aerobic condition in the soil is maintained by drip irrigation, the roots don't drown, the soil's beneficial bacteria can continue to release valuable nutrients, and harmful anaerobic fungi don't easily proliferate—thus, better growth and greater yields

The lower chart (From Drip Irrigation for Every Landscape and All Climates) and shows how the water can move in a theoretical soil. The darker the wet spot, the more it is anaerobic.

Yikes, Don't do this at home!


There's a reason it's called "spaghetti" tubing. Here we see some breeding to make more of a mess in the garden. Avoid the mess with in-line emitter tubing. I favor it over all "spaghetti" for most landscape uses in my book Drip Irrigation, For Every Landscape & All Climates.

Springtime: Starting Up Your Drip Irrigation System


Time to flush out the drip systems and plan irrigation timing. As the soil begins to dry in the arid summer-rainless gardens, it's time to turn on the system to keep the soil as moist as it was in Spring. Like good comedy, timing is everything.

I like to think of frequent irrigation as "topping off the tank." Starting with an ideal soil moisture, (not too anaerobically wet and not too parched) the goal is to replace, as often as each day, exactly the amount of moisture lost due to evaporation from the soil and transpiration from the plant's leaves (this amount is called the ET rate, for EvapoTranspiration), plus an amount that represents enough extra water for higher yields or more gorgeous ornamental foliage. I quote from the preeminent book on trees, Arboriculture, by Richard W. Harris: "In contrast to other systems, drip irrigation must be frequent; waterings should occur daily or every two days during the main growing season...the amount of water applied should equal water lost through evapotranspiration."

Three studies summed up by D. A. Bucks and F. S. Nakayama and A. W. Warrick in “Principles, Practices, and Potentialities of Trickle (Drip) Irrigation,” “Imply that the best policy is to apply water frequently as possible... assuming that no problems of soil aeration, plant disease or restricted plant rooting will occur.”

This is not to say that experience with other crops or plants wouldn’t produce different results. In a study of cucumbers and melons (“Effects of Different Irrigation Scheduling and Systems on Yield Response on Melon and Cucumber,” P. Mannini, Boglona, Italy, Acta Horticulturae #228 [1988], pg. 155-162) it was found that three-day versus six-day intervals of irrigation “had no effect on yield or observed parameters.” Obviously, the details need to be adjusted to the specific plant and any observed response. In another study, as presented on pg. 282 of “Principles, Practices, and Potentialities of Trickle (Drip) Irrigation,” “Less frequent [12-, seven-, six- or three-day intervals versus daily] irrigation tended to increase yields on cabbage, cantaloupe and grapes. Shallow-rooted dry onions [Editor's note: onions' roots can grow down to three feet] had higher yields with daily than with weekly trickle irrigations.” Nature is diverse, and so should be our response.

An ET-based irrigation schedule means applying the exact same amount of water as used on, for example, a monthly basis, but in a very different pattern of application. If the daily ET requirement is .125 gallons per square foot - as described in my book with the ET chart on page 52 - Drip Irrigation, For Every Landscape & All Climates - then a weekly watering schedule would apply seven times this amount (.875 gallons) and a monthly watering would apply 30 times this amount (3.75 gallons)—but all equal to the same daily unit of water.

Frequent Irrigation of Xeric Plants
There are plenty of xeric California native plants which can be killed by improper irrigation, but the range of watering options for xeric plants is greater than many assume. Consider the new cultivar garden installed in 1992 at the highly respected Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Pasadena, CA, which contains an enormous number of California native plants. To maintain these specimens, the Garden purchased thousands of dollars worth of the same in-line emitter tubing I recommend in my drip irrigation book. This tubing has special pressure-compensating emitters, with a complex, or "tortuous" path which prevents clogging, preinstalled inside the 1/2-inch drip hose. In the Santa Ana garden, the tubing was laid out on a clayey soil in a conservative pattern which allocates only about two to three emitters per plant.

While they didn't irrigate daily, the system, during the first year, dispensed water twice weekly for two minutes. This is, of course, far more frequent than the common drought-resistant gardening concept of no summer watering or only occasional deep watering. According to staff horticulturist Bart O'Brien, "The growth has been tremendous." This success is due to the proper mix and placement of emitters, appropriate irrigation intervals and length of irrigation. In the second year, the irrigation was stepped back to once every five days with a staggered irrigation cycle (on for a minute, off for 1/2-hour, on for a minute, off for 1/2-hour and on for one minute). This fancy scheduling was necessary to deal with their clay soil, which quickly puddles under most schedules or types of irrigation.

He Fooled Around & Fell in Love with Plants



Elvin Bishop loves to garden. And though perhaps best known for his gold-record Rhythm-and-Blues classics like "I Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” Bishop, 62, is serious when it comes to growing things. For 27 years, along with his wife Cara and daughter Emily, he's been cultivating a medley of flowers, vegetables, herbs, berries and fruits around his Marin County, California home.
(See the photo on the left.)

He uses Toro’s brown-colored in-line emitter tubing in much of his garden. (As recommended in my book Drip Irrigation, Foe Every Landscape and All Climates.) The photo is a close up of his beans with in-line drip tubing.

Bishop's interest in Oriental vegetables was initiated by his marriage to Cara Wada, whose Japanese-American heritage and traditional cooking style brought more far-eastern vegetables into her husband's diet, then into his garden. “Cara's family made me aware of different tasty Oriental vegetables. I figure if it tastes good, then it’s worth growing. Besides, it’s nice to have vegetables to give away to the family.”

Many Oriental vegetables are members of the cabbage or crucifer family (Brassica spp.) and thrive in moderate weather. In the Marin-County "Mediterranean" climate, winter gardening makes good sense; plenty of winter rain keeps things moist and, after temperatures drop, the cold keeps most pests (including the aphids and root maggots which can thwart summer plantings, but not, unfortunately, slugs and snails) at bay.

The secret to a garden which can be harvested from mid-winter through the following spring is timing, and Bishop’s sense of the rhythm of the seasons is finely tuned. His brief recipe for cultivating Brassicas : choose seed for early-, mid- and late-season crops to spread the harvest. Seed everything on June 1st in six-packs, using sterile potting mix. In two to three weeks, transplant deeply into four-inch pots. Set out into the garden at the beginning of July. Shade for several days if the weather is hot. Water till the rains begin. Weed as needed and harvest when ready.

Reaping the Rewards
In addition to its other rewards, Bishop's garden offers an abundance of produce; each year he personally puts up about 300 jars of beans, corn, pickled beets, dill pickles, applesauce, apple juice, peaches, plums, pears, tomatoes and various jams, including kiwi.

Elvin Bishop may sing the blues for a living, but in his garden, life is sweet.

Wet Spots in Your Garden



The wet spot on the surface of the soil is misleading. The wet spots are at certain intervals, but don't represent what is going on. The photo on the left shows the misleading wet spots. The drawing on the right (from my book Drip Irrigation of Every Landscape and All Climates) shows that the wet spots beneath each emitter merge to form one continous zone of moisture. The soil for the entire length of the in-line tubing is moist some four to six inches beneath the surface, depending on the soil type. Sandier soils require tubing with the emitters pre-installed 12 inches apart. While heavier, clayey soils only need emitters every 24 inches.

Proper Drip Irrigation Layout



In Drip Irrigation, For Every Landscape and All Climates, I recommend laying out parallel lines, or “laterals,” of tubing throughout the entire bed. I always stock the 1/2-gph, 12-inch-interval version because I install drip systems for different clients with different types of soil. The 1/2-gph tubing with the 12-inch spacing along the hose’s length is the only one that will water sandy soil. You can have your local irrigation supplier order tubing with 6-inch spacing in the drip hose. Yet, clay-loam soils can also be irrigated by turning on the system for a shorter period of time because the water easily spreads laterally. The parallel lines of tubing might be as close together as 6 or 12 inches in sandy soils and as far apart as 24 inches in heavy clay-loams. If you have a fairly heavy soil and want to save money, buy the tubing with 18-inch or 24-inch intervals between emitters, and you’ll save 25% or 40% respectively. Also, a higher flow rate, such as 1 gph, will help the water to spread wider than with the slower 1/2-gph emitter tubing. At worst, you’ll just have to run the system a little longer to get the wet spots to meet underground along the length of the tubing.

Healthy Roots



As mentioned in my book Roots Demystified, Change Your Gardening Habits to Help Roots Thrive, if led by available moisture and nutrition, a tree may tunnel its roots through soil space ranging from an area one-half wider than the dripline to as much as three times further. A deep sandy soil offers little resistance to growing roots and allows for root exploration of three or more times the width of the tree.

This oak tree has mulch out to the dripline of the tree. While not the ideal it sure is a great improvement over how most developers treat native trees. This is the best example I have seen. It is located at a public community center. The sign offers great educational advice.

Unlike the dying tree in the previous blog (3-24-10), this oak trees is thriving.

Concrete Kills



In my book Roots Demystified, Change Your Gardening Habits to Help Roots Thrive I talk about how important it is to allow the soil to breath for the best growth of roots. Roots with compaction or hardscape don't thrive. Here's a large, formerly beautiful, oak tree surrounded by a parking lot, driveway, sidewalk, and street. As the butchered pruning shows, the tree is rapidly dying over the past five years - a short period of time for an oak tree that can last for several hundred years or more. Such a glorious tree slowly dieing due to an anaerobic form of root bondage.

Don't do this at home!!


A futile attempt at pruning an ornamental ‘Bradford Pear’ tree to keep it from blocking the name of the business. The tree was bought on a whim by somebody that wasn’t thinking about the tree's future size. The pitiful attempt to turn them into some kind of pollarded tree sure doesn’t seem to working. This tree has been pruned (hacked) this way for over 5 years. Don’t make this mistake! Sycamore/London Plane trees work much better and are the common tree for pollarding trees in Paris and other cities and countries.

Luther Burbank's Lethal Legacy


The famous and revered Luther Burbank propagated mistletoe Viscum album seed supplied to him by J.C. Vaughan of Chicago, II 1990. It soon became a “weed”. A silent, slow killer.

It’s known to infect more than 400 taxa of trees and shrubs. Presently in California, common hosts include species of maple (Acer), alder, (Alnus), apple (Malus), cottonwood (Populus), plum (Prunus), locust (Robinia), willow (Salix), birch (Betula), hawthorn (Crataegus), and elm (Ulmus) and now on oaks (Quercus).

Mistletoe sucks water out the plant [usually a tree, the green balls on the limbs above]. Over time, it can weaken the tree. Then sometimes bark beetles will come in and finish off the tree. I watched an apple tree die over a 12-year period. Slow death, but an early death nonetheless. Now I'm watching a entire apple orchard slowly die.

One report said, “By 1984, the gross area covered by the parasite had spread to about 71 sq. miles. The average distance of spread from the point of introduction was 3.5 miles. Most of the infestation is within a 1-mile radius of the original centre of introduction.” [The photo above is taken 10 miles from Burbank’s Sebastopol, CA farm.] According to another researcher “It is not expected to expand the boundary of its present range since there are few susceptible host trees surrounding the area.”

Hah, I recently traveled over 50 miles away from Burbank’s farm [and over two bridges!] and spotted the mistletoe on a Popular tree.

A RANT


Everybody seems to be jumping on the bandwagon to “Buy Local”. “Think Globally, Act Locally”. Then they turn to Amazon to buy a book or whatever. Since the Internet is not “local”, I’ve come up with the phrase:

“BUY FROM THE SOURCE TO HELP KEEP WRITERS WRITING”

I have had a special offering of $20 [no S&H or tax] to readers of my blog for my book on Drip Irrigation since December 29, 2009. Not one sale. [Over 930 people have visited my profile.]

Let’s look at the math: Amazon charges $16.47 for my Drip Irrigation book with a cover price of $24.95. [a savings of 34 %]. They charge $3.95 for shipping which equals $20.42.

I‘m offering the book at $20 via Priority Mail, no CA tax, and with an autograph. [As a writing friend says, “That adds another $.12 to the value!”.]

So, given my generous offer, buying from Amazon costs you $.42 more than buying from me. With no autograph. [$.42 minus the $.12 mentioned above equals $.20 more!]

My book is not sold by me to Amazon, just through my distributor. From my distributor I get a generous 70% of the NET, not gross. This means the money for me is not based on retail price. Amazon buys the book somewhere less than 66% off the list price because if it sold it at 66% it would just break even at their price of $16.47 [34% off]. My NET per book is about a mere $4.94. I think, the Amazon game is to become a brand in a few years, while it took Coca-Cola many decades to establish their brand. Amazon is willing to sell at near cost to gain market share and “brand”. The low return to me is supposed be compensated by the increased volume of sales. In my opinion, Amazon is leading to the decline or death of small presses and self-publishers. [In spite of the hype, it’s a relief to know that all on-line book sales represent only 21% of all books sold.]

A Glimmer of Fall Color


There are two natural seasons of leaf fall here. To save moisture near the end of a long, dry summer, the native horse chestnuts drop many or all of their crispy-brown leaves by early September to stop transpiration. The redwoods let loose thousands of their tawny-brown needled leaves, but remain evergreen. The lane is mulched by the enormous release of this otherwise transpiring foliage. (This past year saw the deepest mulch of fallen redwood leaves due to a blight promoted by a rare June rain.) The California bay trees send down shower of some of their mottled green and yellow leaves splotched gray-brown.

Each fall presents a special composition as I walk over the leaves along my driveway. I find the fallen leaves of the crisp-brown horse chestnut, the dull-brown of one of the few deciduous oaks, the golden leaves of a single cherry tree that somehow appeared amongst the native trees. One native plant that is sure to delight the eye is the thimble berry with it’s golden leaves against a backdrop of rich, evergreen foliage. (See above.) These bright spots of color remain late into the winter. Here they were photographed at the end of December.

Sometimes the few deciduous leaves grace the ground in a crisp crackle. Early rains dampen fallen leaves into a lackluster, moist clutter.

Glorious Monarch Butterflies


I’ve always been enchanted by Monarch butterflies. I still have the Monarch butterflies I captured and mounted in my butterfly collection when I was about ten. (Back then butterflies were everywhere and the world seemed abundant and Earth Day didn’t exist. What seems like an ecological travesty now was a simple hobby back in the early 1960s.) There’s something about the bold, rich orange of the wings with thick-black lines outlining the wings and veins of the wing and the amber-colored spots on a backdrop of black around the edges of the wings that has always intrigued me.

While young, I read about the mystery of the unknown wintering over spot for the Monarchs that flutter south into Mexico for their winter respite. In St. Louis, MO at age 12, I had the joy of seeing a shrub where hundreds of Monarchs gathered for the night—huddled together in the chill of the early fall night. I thought I had reached butterfly nirvana.

Twenty years later, I traveled away from my little mountain top down to the coast near Big Sur, California. There, in a secluded eucalyptus grove was, for me, the holy grail of Monarchs. Instead of fleeing south for a winter in warm Mexico, Sierra Mountain monarchs also flock to warm protected groves of trees near the Pacific ocean’s edge. While the native cypress was historically their natural habitat, the eucalyptus has superceded the cypress as the preferred habitat. In this special place, both the cypress and eucalyptus grow nearby and the Monarchs alight by the tens of thousands along the bark of eucalyptus trees. While only hundreds gather among the cypresses refuge.

With the introduction of the Australian eucalyptus and other exotic plants there are now many sweet treats to be found among this floral island of cultivated landscape. There is one particular eucalyptus in a nearby open lawn that doesn't spread into a dense thicket like the most common eucalyptus—the blue gum eucalyptus. Like all eucalyptus’s, it blooms in the mid- to late-winter. This particular specimen has flashy orange-red blossoms that flower with great abundance. Those Monarch’s warmed by the sun make their circuitous flight to sup on the sweet nectar of this tree. The flowers providing a dazzling backdrop in comparison to the more muted colors of the Monarchs.

Invisible Fire


Fire. Essential and dreaded. Fire has historical tendrils back to primeval times when people first discovered how to make fire when needed. Fire also includes the combustion and flames of a gas stove and oven, campfires, propane-fueled lanterns, and barbecue briquettes. All welcomed, desired.

Every garden is always on “fire”—without flames. Combustion is the oxidation of carbon-based materials which usually produces a flame. Garden “fires” are usually invisible, slow, and important. A single teaspoon of soil contains over one million of the soil’s beneficial bacteria alone This does not include: nitrogen-fixing soil algae, microbes, beneficial fungi and many other useful life. Each consumes various life-forms or inert elements and releases very minute amounts of heat into the soil. Like an aerobic workout, soil heats up—only in extremely tiny amounts.

Combustion in the compost bin also is at a lower temperature than a visible fire. Microorganisms feed on the carbohydrates; the carbon. The warmth of a well-made compost pile is tangible garden low-grade combustion. When the first nips of frost arrive, a compost made of fallen leaves, green lawn clippings, manure and kitchen scraps (I send all my kitchen compostables to an earthworm bin.) sends its wisps of warm fog to rise above its mass.

Only the fanatic composter runs the risk of spontaneous combustion. The pile has to be very large. And it rarely bursts into flames, but usually smolders like a coal mine "fire." Tim Dundon aka Zeke the Sheik (the compost king), of Los Angeles County, accumulated a compost pile over 17 years which reached the gargantuan size of 40 feet tall and up to 200 feet long. Twice in one month the pile spontaneously burst into flames and smoke, and the fire department arrived to douse the flames. While Zeke defends composting as "the key of energy that will eventually set mankind free from misery and gravity," I'd say his pile shows what happens when a zealous intellect elevates a natural process to unnatural proportions. He turned a beneficial process into a hazard.

YIKES, Don't do this at home!




































NOT MY GARDEN!

I ran across this poor tree and was amazed at how it was butchered. Seems they tried to cut almost flush on a few cuts. But heaven knows who left the enormous "stub".

If your tree, like this fir, doesn't have a noticeable hump or shoulder (branch collar) at the base of the limb, you can use the drawing to figure out where to cut. Make one cut a foot or so under the limb part way out from the trunk. Cut further out from the first cut. When the branch falls, it won't rip bark past the first cut. Lastly, make a proper cut as illustrated from A to D. In all cases, don't cut flush!

Pruning in the Summer versus Winter Pruning


Why in the dickens am I mentioning summer pruning now? Well many people still don’t know that it’s possible to prune throughout the summer. I used to have to cover summer pruning during winter pruning lectures because nobody would sign up for just a summer pruning class in the summer. In fact summer pruning may be more helpful than winter pruning. Summer pruning [especially repeated pruning] is the best way to control a tree that is growing to tall or fast. Summer pruning slightly reduces the tree’s vigor. While winter pruning stimulates new growth in the spring as it begins to leaf out.

Grandfather never lied. When he said “pruning trees in the summer is bad, especially with fruit trees—they might bleed to death” he was just repeating an heirloom myth. I know better now. Summer pruning will not cause plants to perish. In reality, summer pruning is a very valuable addition to the gardener’s repertoire of techniques (a tool, if you will) for shaping and nurturing all garden growth.

Summer Pruning’s Virtues

There are many practical aspects to summer pruning. First, it’s comfortable; you can wear shorts and a tee shirt instead of being cumbersomely bundled up. Now, pruning is spread over a greater number of months to ease a gardener’s busy spring. Since the foliage is readily visible, it’s easier to spot dead, damaged, or diseased growth; and you can watch how pruning effects light and shadow patterns.

It offers more opportunities to control unwanted growth on a tree. Mid- to late-summer is the best time to remove unwanted suckers and so-called water sprouts—those poorly-named straight shoots which tower through a tree’s crown [a.k.a., canopy] or along the top of horizontal limb—with a single pruning.

Summer pruning can allow you to enjoy bountiful flowering and then control the size of the tree. Summer pruning allows more light into the crown to add a colorful blush to ripening fruit. Pruning cuts callus-over with the assistance of active photosynthesis, sealing the wound.

Summer Pruning’s Shortcomings

Foremost, summer pruning is a new concept to many. Pruning trees in leaf makes it harder to see a deciduous tree’s winter branching pattern. The main and secondary limbs may get sunburned. [When pruning in hot summer areas, cut with discretion, leaving enough foliage to protect the main the trunk.] If you prune too late in the summer where winters are cold, any new growth will be vulnerable to some freeze damage. With fruit trees, some fruit may be knocked off if you prune on older limbs before harvesting.

Some diseases enter open pruning cuts. The fungus Anthracnose sp. causes cankers and enters cuts during fall rains in the west—don’t prune too late in the summer, allow plenty of time for a callus to form. Check the Cooperative Extension Service and its Master Gardener Program or an arborist for other diseases specific to your area.

Soil Biota Horizons

The upper layers of the soil are the most aerobic, with the highest population of air-loving bacteria and soil flora. As seen above, the top three inches of the soil has nearly four-and-a-half times more bacteria, almost eight-and-a-half times more actinomycetes [tiny aerobic organisms that help decompose dead plant tissue], more than twice as many fungi, and five times the algae of soil found eight to ten inches deep. These bacteria and flora are responsible for the decomposition of organic matter and the liberation of mineralized [unavailable] nutrients into a soluble form that the plant can absorb. They live near the soil’s surface because they must have plenty of oxygen to fuel their activity.

Battle of the Heirlooms Versus the Hybrids


Hybrid seed is often selected for providing resistance to specific diseases and pests. With tomatoes, you'll notice all, or some, of the letters V, F, and N. These letters tell the buyer that the tomato is resistant to, respectively, verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt, and nematodes. Some heirlooms have resistance to these same factors, but often not all three in one plant. The difficulty with heirlooms is with their lack of genetic similarity. If your plants are attacked by a disease which the hybrid isn't "programmed" (or, selected) for, then the plants may be sitting ducks. Perhaps the whole field, or a great portion of it, will succumb to the disease. The dogmatic opponents of hybrids often mention this lack of genetic diversity as the Achilles' heel of hybrid seed. But, in all their testaments to the evils of hybrid seed, the heirloom proponents can only dredge up a handful of scary agricultural examples. More notable to the home gardener, the Achilles' heel argument only works well with the agricultural scale. Five hundred acres of one type of wheat is a far cry from the dozen or two types of vegetables, and the several or more varieties of many of the types, found in the average home garden. If all the tomato plants die, you'll be depressed—but, you won't be lacking in things to eat.

While the following story doesn't represent hard science, it will illustrate the difficulties generated when dogma on either side becomes fixed like a case of mental lockjaw.

The setting is the rural acreage a nonprofit organization we'll call the Institute. Located in the coastal belt of Northern California, these well-tended organic gardens—with an incredible organic matter content of 12%—lay at the western edge of a reasonable tomato climate. Still, every three- to four-years, a late summer blight stimulated by intruding all day fogs will wipe out 80% of the plants or a late spring frost will damage or kill a number of plants. (Flavor is another problem altogether. If the warmth of an unfoggy summer graces the garden and Indian summer lingers into October, then you'll have good chance at something approaching the archetypical Midwestern smile-on-your-lips tomato flavor.)

The Institute attracts the young, the enthusiastic and the righteous to a variety of gardening and landscaping programs. All who arrive come already indoctrinated in the Church of the Organic Way. A few have gardened before. Many already have it in for anything corporate, industrial, or chemical. This is a fertile breeding ground for the dogma of heirlooms.

The young interns got swept away with the growing tide of interest in preserving genetic vegetable diversity and started growing rare and unusual heirloom varieties. (They often turned a superior nose to heirloom flowers—as they only grew food, for sustenance.) They grew 25 to 40 varieties of heirloom tomatoes a season to sample the flavor and save seed. Somehow, they decided to have a contest for disease hardiness between hybrid and heirloom, open-pollinated varieties. They may have been shamed into it by the pestering of the remnants of the pro-hybrid gardeners. Or, the Church of Heirlooms may have decided to prove its superiority to the rest of the heretics. Whatever. The proselytizers of open-pollination made a big stink about the showdown. Many an evening meal ended up with various predictions of the triumphant heirlooms. They reveled in how the final report would show that their study had proven heirlooms victorious. I was living there at the time and found the horticultural piety amusing one day, and tedious on other days.

Summer passed. Evening conversation turned to other events or topics. And the first frosts blackened what remained of the tomato plants. Finally, I pulled aside one of the clergy from the Church of Heirlooms. "Where's the report," I asked. "What were the results?" In a hushed tone, he said "the hybrids were more disease resistant, so we didn't do a report." So much for the integrity of this flock of the Church of Heirlooms. The results failed to confirm their expectations, so nobody will find out. (These are the same people who degraded Nixon for the shabby and criminal way in which he suppressed information and kept secrets.!)

A Sheety Garden

Nature builds soil from the top down with all the decomposition of carbonaceous materials such as fallen leaves and decaying grasses, as well as various forms of feces. In addition, there’s a lot going on, root-wise, beneath the surface of the soil that helps it improve without cultivation. The activities of roots loosen the soil; the roots of nitrogen-fixing plants add nitrogen; “compost” is created as roots rot at all levels to create decomposed organic matter for the use of other plants and microbes; nutrients cycle from root systems to the foliage of plants (and back to the earth again as leaf, stem, branch and trunk litter); roots develop tunnels for the movement of earthworms, root canals help rainwater soak into deeper areas and root exudates create a microbial “soup” which helps to liberate all manner of nutrients.

Sheet Composting

Sheet composting offers an easy way to improve the garden's soil without strenuous digging. The technique is akin to Ruth Stout's deep mulching practices. Sheet composting has nothing to do with woven percale or thread counts, but refers to the use of thin layers of compostable material laid out over the soil like a thick mulch. By layering high-carbon wastes with nitrogenous plant refuse, you essentially construct a thin, wide, two-dimensional compost pile. Use a blend of dry brown leaves or woody stems (chipped, chopped, or not); fresh grass clippings; green-manure crops such as buckwheat, vetch, bell beans, and clover; wet kitchen garbage or scraps (no meat scraps, as they’ll tend to attract hungry animals and/or smell bad); and green weeds from the garden before their seeds ripen.

Experiment with a ratio of one part green matter to three or four parts dry dead matter. Water the dry materials as you’re layering. At each planting location, make a large planting pocket in the native soil to receive the roots. NOTE: sheet composting doesn't generate enough heat to kill weed seeds, diseases, or pathogens, so after planting, water everything again, then cover the area with five to ten sheets of newspaper, and the newspaper with a weed-free mulch; this should take care of the nasties. The sheet composting slowly helps improve soils from the top down while allowing the gardener to quickly dispose of large quantities of compostable materials and avoid unnatural tillage. The sheet-composted area will require more irrigation the first year or two as the roots grow into the uncultivated soil.
